Kauehi Island

Is a nearly circular atoll about 24 km across and lies about 40km NE of Fakarava. It is very low lying, but well planted with coconut trees. Her lagoon is known for its beauty and its pearl farms. The main village, Tearavero is ideally located on a beautiful strip of sand and concentrates most of the 400 inhabitants of the island. Kauehi was discovered by FitzRoy in 1835 and recorded by him as Cavahi. It was one of the last atolls in the archipelago to be seen by Europeans.
